At approximately a quarter past eleven on 9 July 2026, the President of the Customs House Agents Association of Ghana stood before members, regulators and industry leaders at the CLOGSAG Auditorium in Accra.
The occasion was CHAAG inauguration ceremony, held under the theme: Advancing Professional Customs Brokerage and Trade Facilitation.
The President made clear that the ceremony represented more than the formal induction of officers.
Today, we do not merely inaugurate officers. We inaugurate a movement – a solemn commitment to professionalism, integrity, and the welfare of every licensed customs house agent in Ghana.
He affirmed that CHAAG exists for its members, is governed by its members and will advocate for their interests. Addressing the Association 42 founding member companies, he described their decision to establish CHAAG as bold and principled.
The regulator responds
When Ms Theresa Potakey, Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations at the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, delivered the keynote address, she congratulated CHAAG Council, executives and members on the milestone.
She then directly acknowledged the President commitments.
I have heard all the promises the President made – so we will hold you to all those promises.
The statement was delivered warmly, but its importance was unmistakable. CHAAG promises had become a public standard against which its leadership and members could be assessed.
A partner in Ghana trade system
The Deputy Commissioner described customs house agents as the interface between the trading public and the Customs Division. Their work supports legitimate trade, revenue mobilisation and compliance at Ghana seaports, airports and land borders.
Where agents act with competence, integrity and professionalism, trade moves more smoothly, revenue is properly assessed and national security is protected.
She welcomed CHAAG as a structured platform for:
- Constructive engagement with the Customs Division
- Stronger professional standards, ethics and discipline
- Continuous training and capacity development
- A collective voice on trade facilitation
- Engagement on AfCFTA and customs modernisation
The inauguration therefore marked more than CHAAG public introduction. It established a relationship of accountability between the Association, its members and the institutions with which they work.
Recognition gives CHAAG a place at the table. The credibility needed to remain there must be earned through every declaration filed, every document presented and every client advised.
The true measure of the inauguration will not be the applause received on the day. It will be the professionalism, integrity and service demonstrated by CHAAG members going forward.
